Configure Profile Field Definitions

These are the definitions for the security-related fields that appear in the third step of the Create Device Profile wizard.

IP Address Assignment

DHCP

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol: With dynamic addressing, a device can have a different IP address every time it connects to the network.

This means that a new computer can be added to a network without manually assigning it a unique IP address.

Always Available.

Static IP

A constant assigned IP address for the device.

Always Available.

Subnet Mask

Mask (which is a filter that selectively includes or excludes certain values) used to determine to which subnet (a portion of a network that shares a common address component) an IP address belongs.

Available when you select Static IP for IP Address Assignment.

Gateway

IP address of the default router.

Available when you select Static IP for IP Address Assignment.

DNS

Domain Name Server: an internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses.

Available when you select Static IP for IP Address Assignment.

WINS

Windows Internet Naming Service: a system that determines the IP address associated with a particular network computer.

Available when you select Static IP for IP Address Assignment.

SSID

Service Set Identifier: name that identifies a wireless network. The SSID differentiates one WLAN from another; so all access points and all devices attempting to connect to a specific WLAN must use the same SSID.

Always Available.

WEP

WPA

Optional Advanced Settings

Use Mixed Mode

Activate this check box if you have some access points configured to use WPA and others configured to use WPA-2.

In a mixed WPA/WPA-2 network, the device accepts group messages from the access point using WPA/TKIP encryption and messages that are only between the access point and the device using WPA-2/AES encryption.

Do not activate this check box if the access points are configured to use only one or the other. Some devices may fail to connect to the network.

Available when you select WPA-2 for Security.

Advanced Device Settings

See Configuration Parameters for details.

Always Available.
